What is the Hungry Frog Series?
The Hungry Frog series is a series of related educational games. Other Hungry Frog games include two math Hungry Frog games teaching elementary counting skills as well as the Hungry Frog Ion Eaters game teaching ion formulas, names and charges in chemistry.
...........................
What is Equation Eaters?
Like the other Hungry Frog games Equation Eaters is a real-time animated multimedia game and uses feedback loops to focus instruction on areas of difficulty, so that the user is not forever presented with known problems. At all game stages all aspects of the game are fully adjustable by the user, from mundane aspects such as window size and/or color depths to equation set complexity and game speed and difficulty.
Equation eaters is a game for learning math skills ranging from simple addition of small whole numbers to advanced equations involving addition/subtraction and multiplication/division as well as absolute value. You can practice simple problems like 3+0 or 1+2, as well as problems such as |9-(3x13)| ÷ 10 or much more complicated problems which will stump just about anyone without a calculator.
The equation difficulty level is entirely adjustable, so the game can be used to practice the simplest addition problems as well very complicated ones according to the user's wishes.

How do you play?
To play, just double click on the application icon. You can then choose how many frogs with which you want to start the game. Once the game starts, clicking on a frog gives you control of the frog's tongue. Hold the mouse button down and drag the tongue to a fly, then release the mouse button. If the equation of the fly evaluates to the value of the frog, then the frog will eat the fly.
You remain in the game as long as you have tadpoles (the little swimmers swimming around with the frogs). The tadpoles die, as well as grow into new frogs (when this happens you go up a level) so you have to be sure to keep eating (the more you eat, the more tadpoles you get), or you may run out of tadpoles and the game will end.
In addition to Demo Mode (which is always an available option) if you click on a fly the game will pause and show you the frog that wants to eat it, so if you are stumped you can get help this way.

What's the current version?
The current version is v2.1 (as of 2/5/94).

What computer setup do I need to play?
The game has been tested to work with System 7.0.1* or higher, and shouldn't care what Mac it runs on - but color Macs are much nicer. You can run in B&W, 4, 16, 256 or 1000's of colors at any window size up to a two page display (1152x870 pixels). Millions of colors are not supported. Feel free to zoom and resize you windows, this isn't one of those annoying games that forces you to use only one screen size and position!
Remember: smaller windows and fewer colors make the game go faster.
